To comply with the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) regulations all employees involved in lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load must be trained in manual handling. This also applies to staff involved in repetitive tasks such as packing, typing, assembling, cleaning and sorting, using hand-tools, operating machinery and equipment. It is the responsibility of the management and supervisory staff of the company to ensure that training is available to staff and that the staff involved in these practices complete the training.

Manual Handling courses are provided by BMAC Safety Solutions at the clients’ premises.

Course Award

All participants will be granted Certificate of Attendance after successfully completing a practical and written assessment modules. The certificate is awarded by Brendan McAuliffe and is valid for 3 years.

Course Conditions

On the day of the course, two assessments will take place: a practical demonstration assessment and written / oral assessment
You should inform your training coordinator if you are unsure about your lifting capability. Also please notify the coordinator in advance if you have any difficulties related to reading or writing in English, .

• Introduction to Manual Handling;
• The Physiology of the back and human anatomy;
• The Legislation;
• General information related to the manual handling responsibilities of the employer and employees;
• Short explanation of the functions of particular body parts involved in manual handling and how certain injuries can occur;
• Standard list of injuries and risks associated with manual handling;
• During the course we will recreate a standard work activities or workplace setting will be used for practical demonstrations;
• Assessments: Practical Demonstration and assessment in writing with multi-choice questions.

After completion of the course, participants should know:

• How to safely do tasks like lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, restraining, throwing and carrying.
• How to safely do repetitive tasks such as packing, typing, assembling, cleaning and sorting, using hand-tools, operating machinery and equipment.
• Summarise the parts of task specific manual handling risk assessments in their workplace
• Give a description of how to personally risk assess typical manual handling tasks in their workplace
• Describe the 8 principles used in manual handling techniques
• Demonstrate a practical application of safe techniques based on the 8 principles

Typical Audience

Any personnel who routinely carry out any of the following activities: lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, restraining, throwing and carrying*.

The course also includes advice and training for repetitive tasks such as packing, typing, assembling, cleaning and sorting, using hand-tools, operating machinery and equipment.

* The regulations define Manual Handling as “any transporting or supporting of a load by 1 or more employees and includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load which by reason of its characteristics or unfavourable ergonomic conditions involves risk, particularly of back injury to employees.” Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992  (as amended 2007-2016 General Application Regs – MHOR).
